About Us

The César Chávez Scholarship Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It was established in 2004 by a group of individuals from Rhode Island’s Latino community in an effort to assist young Latinos in developing or enhancing their academic goals, and to honor the well-known Latino and civil rights labor leader, César Chávez. We raise funds through our Annual César Chávez Scholarship Fund Breakfast Celebration held every year on Chavez’s birthday anniversary, and also through private donations.

Scholarships Program
  • Undocumented students who live in Rhode Island are invited to apply for the Tam Tran Scholarship. Scholarships in the amount of $500 each will be awarded every year at the César Chávez breakfast on March 31st for the following academic year. Students must fill out an application form and return in February. Go here for more.

Mini-Grant Program
  • Mini-grants ranging from $100 to $300 are available to Latino and non-Latino students who are enrolled full-time in a college or university in Rhode Island, and who wish to organize a Serve & Learn volunteer activity that falls in line with the Core Values of César Chávez and the goals of the César Chávez Serve and Learn Program.

  • We also offer mini-grants to students in grades 6-12 who wish to initiate a volunteer activity that falls in line with the Core Values of César Chávez, and the goals of the César Chávez Serve and Learn Program.

Applicants for Mini-Grants do not have to be of Latino heritage, but the project or area of study for which they are seeking funds must in some way benefit the Latino community of Rhode Island.

Deadlines for mini-grants vary, so read each section carefully.

Community Service Award
  • Nominations for this award are accepted in December each year. One student group who wishes to participate in the Winter Community Food Drive from January to March will be selected. Awarded funds will allow students and their teacher to attend the Annual César Chávez Breakfast. There are specific guidelines and a separate application for this award. Go here for more.
